Zhang Zhenxue

Zhang Zhenxue (张振学), born 1982 in Heilongjiang, graduated with a Master Degree in Oil Painting from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2011. His works have been featured in a range of group exhibitions including Diagonal – Construct a New Context (Joy Art Gallery, Beijing), Shanghai Youth Biennial (China Art Palace, Shanghai), John Moores New Painting Prize Exhibition (Shanghai Gallery of Art, Shanghai). Mixing realism and romanticism, abstraction and expressionism, Chongqing-Sichuan-based Zhang Zhenxue renders his recurring motif of water in thick layers of oil on canvas and rhythmic brushstrokes on paper.

The artists earlier works engulf the viewers in the grandeur of splendid interiors decorated with chandeliers and grand staircases, while his later works are inviting to enter a peaceful, meditative realm of flowing waters. The monumentality and symmetry so vividly observed in Zhang Zhenxue’s early stage of art practice, give place to fluidity, movement, and self-reflection in his newest series.
